How to Calculate a Weighted Grade

A weighted grade gives different categories different importance. The key is multiplying each category score by its weight and combining the contributions.

The formula

Weighted Grade = Σ(Score × Weight) ÷ Σ(Weight)

Worked example

Suppose homework is 90% with a 20% weight, quizzes are 80% with a 30% weight, and exams are 88% with a 50% weight. Each category contributes a fraction of its score to the final course grade.

The contribution from homework is 18 points, quizzes contribute 24 points, and exams contribute 44 points. The total is 86%.

Why weights matter

If an exam is worth half the course, a small change in the exam score can move the overall grade more than the same change in a small homework category.
