    How SGPA is calculated

SGPA is a credit-weighted average for one semester. Each course contributes its grade points multiplied by its credit hours — those are “credit points” — and SGPA is total credit points divided by total credits.

    SGPA = Σ (Credit × Grade Point) ÷ Σ (Credits)

A 4-credit course moves your SGPA twice as much as a 2-credit course. A plain average of grade points would be wrong whenever courses carry different credits.

    Worked example (UGC's own)

    Six courses, credits 3, 4, 3, 3, 3, 4; grade points 8, 7, 6, 10, 5, 6. Credit points: 24 + 28 + 18 + 30 + 15 + 24 = 139. Credits = 20. SGPA = 139 ÷ 20 = 6.95.

    Which scale should you use?

Your institution's own. The UGC 10-point scale (O=10, A+=9, A=8, B+=7, B=6, C=5, P=4, F=0) is the most common in India, but the letters and values differ elsewhere: VTU uses S/A/B/C/D/E/F with E=4 as a pass grade; Anna uses O/A+/A/B+/B/C/RA; GTU uses AA/AB/BB/BC/CC/CD/DD/EE/FF with EE=3; Mumbai University has used both E=5/P=4 and O…D=4 schemes across faculties and eras. Pick your system in the calculator — never assume one scale fits all.

Failed courses, non-credit courses, and retakes

Under UGC rules, an F counts as 0 grade points and its credits stay in the denominator. Anna excludes RA/U courses from GPA entirely. Mumbai University counts a failed course once, and when later passed, only the new grade figures. Use the per-course Count checkbox to match your rules: uncheck a course your system excludes.

    SGPA to percentage

There is no universal conversion. Apply your institution's own formula — for example, Anna ×10, VTU (SGPA−0.75)×10. Use the CGPA to Percentage Calculator with your university's preset.

    Common mistakes

    • Averaging grade points without credits. A 10 in a 2-credit course and a 6 in a 4-credit course average to 7.33 credit-weighted, not 8.00.
    • Using the wrong scale. A “B” is 6 on the UGC scale but 8 on the VTU scale. Letters don't travel across systems.
    • Deriving grade points from raw marks with a generic table. Marks-to-grade bands are set by each institution — and some use relative grading.
    • Counting a failed course the wrong way. UGC counts F as 0; Anna excludes RA. Know your system.

    SGPA Calculator FAQ

    How do I calculate SGPA?

Multiply each course's credits by its grade points to get credit points, add all credit points, and divide by total credits: SGPA = Σ(credit × grade point) / Σ(credits). A 4-credit course counts twice as much as a 2-credit course.

What is the difference between SGPA and CGPA?

SGPA covers one semester. CGPA covers your whole program: total credit points across all semesters divided by total credits. CGPA is credit-weighted, not a plain average of SGPAs.

Which grade-point scale should I use?

Your institution's own scale. The UGC 10-point scale (O=10 … P=4) is the most common in India, but VTU, Anna, GTU, and Mumbai University all use different letters and values. Pick your system above — never assume one scale fits all.

Do failed courses count in SGPA?

It depends on your system. Under UGC rules, an F counts as 0 grade points and its credits stay in the denominator. Anna excludes RA/U courses from GPA. Use the Count checkbox per course to match your rules.

Can I calculate SGPA from percentages?

Only through your institution's marks-to-grade table, which converts percentage bands to letter grades and grade points. There is no universal percentage-to-grade-point mapping — do not derive grade points from raw marks with a generic table.

    How is SGPA rounded?

UGC and VTU express SGPA to two decimal places. This calculator shows two decimals and keeps full precision in the breakdown so you can verify the arithmetic.
