How to Read a Grading Scale
A grading scale maps percentage ranges to letter grades such as A, B, C, D, and F. The exact boundaries are set by the school, course, or instructor.
Start with the published cutoff
Check your syllabus, student handbook, or gradebook for the exact percentage range. A common reference might use 93% for an A and 90% for an A-, but your institution may use different boundaries.
Why one scale is not universal
Schools may use plus/minus grades, different cutoffs, or custom policies. Some courses also apply curves or special rounding rules.
Use calculations with the right context
A calculator can give you a mathematically correct percentage while the official letter grade still depends on your course's policy. Treat the percentage as the numerical result and the syllabus as the authoritative grading rule.
