There is no single PowerSchool formula

PowerSchool computes a course grade one of four ways, chosen by your teacher/district per reporting term: Total Points, Category Weighting, Term Weighting, or Standards Weighting. This calculator covers the first two (the ones students replicate from Class Score Detail); term combining has its own tool. If you pick the wrong method, you get a wrong grade — the same assignments give 84% under category weighting and 85% under total points in the preloaded example.

Total Points

Earned ÷ possible across the whole course, then to a letter via the scale. PowerSchool's own example: 1250 of 1600 = 78%. Per-assignment weights multiply both earned and possible.

Category Weighting

Each category's percentage (points-based, with assignment weights) is multiplied by its weight; the weighted values are added. Categories can be left out entirely. Weights should add to 100%, but this calculator normalizes by total weight so partial setups still compute.

Grade = Σ (Category % × Weight) ÷ Σ (Weights)

Statuses: flags, not a universal rule

PowerSchool documents flags — Collected, Late, Missing, Exempt, Absent-incomplete, Incomplete — but states no universal “Missing = 0” rule. In practice, districts often have teachers enter a 0 placeholder alongside the Missing code. This calculator makes every status an explicit choice: Missing counts as 0, or excluded. Exempt (^) always excludes. Collected excludes until scored. Late carries no automatic penalty. In the portal, ^ = exempt, * = not included, 1 = may include unpublished assignments or special weighting.

Minimum Assignment Value floor

A district/school floor (0–99.999%) auto-raises counted scores below it. A 20% score with a 50% floor becomes 50% before the grade is computed. Turn the floor on only if your district uses one.

Manual override

Teachers can override a final grade; the original calculated grade shows beneath with an indicator. The override is what appears on the record.

Why did my grade drop?

  • A 0 entered for missing work. The single most common cause — check whether the Missing assignment shows a 0 in the Score column.
  • An exempt assignment stopped being exempt. The ^ disappeared and the score counts.
  • An unpublished assignment appeared. The portal's 1 footnote warns the grade may include unpublished work.
  • A weighting change. Category weights or the method changed for the term.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming Missing = 0. A bare Missing flag with no score may not count at all. Check the Score column.
  • Using the wrong method. Total points and category weighting give different answers on the same assignments.
  • Assuming one PowerSchool scale. Scales are district-configured per course. The 90/80/70/60 preset is one common choice, not PowerSchool's rule.
  • Looking for a what-if feature. PowerSchool's portal has none — use the target solver above.
  • Looking for a “Grade Calculator” button inside PowerSchool. No such button exists. That claim, seen on one site, is false.

PowerSchool Grade Calculator FAQ

How does PowerSchool calculate grades?

There is no single PowerSchool formula. Your teacher/district picks one of four methods per reporting term: Total Points (earned ÷ possible), Category Weighting (each category's % × its weight), Term Weighting (longer term from shorter terms), or Standards Weighting. Pick the method above that matches your course.

What does Missing mean in PowerSchool?

Missing is a flag, not a universal rule. PowerSchool documents the Missing flag but states no universal Missing = 0 rule. In practice, districts often have teachers enter a 0 placeholder alongside the Missing code. This calculator makes Missing an explicit choice: counts as 0, or excluded.

Why did my PowerSchool grade drop suddenly?

The usual causes: a 0 entered for missing work, an exempt assignment that stopped being exempt, an unpublished assignment appearing (the portal's 1 footnote), or a weighting change. Check Class Score Detail for ^ (exempt), * (not included), and 1 (unpublished/special weighting).

Does PowerSchool have a what-if grade feature?

No. PowerSchool's portal has no student-facing hypothetical-score simulator, unlike Canvas. The target solver below fills that gap: enter a target grade and the remaining weight to see what you need next.

What is the Minimum Assignment Value in PowerSchool?

A district/school floor (0–99.999%) that auto-raises counted scores below it. A 20% score with a 50% floor becomes 50% before the grade is computed. Turn the floor on above only if your district uses one, and enter its value.

Can a teacher override my PowerSchool grade?

Yes. Teachers can override a final grade (professional judgment); the original calculated grade shows beneath with an indicator. Enter an override above to see the calculated grade alongside it — the override is what appears on the record.
