Preloaded (Springfield's example): Homework 12/13 + 11/13 = 88.46%, Quizzes 15/17 = 88.24%, weights 50/50 → Overall 88.35% from unrounded values. Factor: assumed multiplier on earned + possible; leave at 1 unless your teacher uses it. A category with no counted work contributes nothing.

There is no single Schoology formula

Schoology computes a course grade from categories, then periods. Each category has its own Calculated by setting — Total Points (the default) or Percent — plus an optional weight and drop-lowest. A period grade is the weighted combination of its category grades, computed from unrounded values. The final grade combines grading periods (plus midterm/final periods) with period weights. Teacher/school setup decides all of it.

Total Points vs Percent

Total Points: category grade = Σ earned ÷ Σ possible × 100. A 200-point item counts twice a 100-point item. Percent: category grade = average of the items' percentages. Each item counts equally regardless of points. The same scores give different answers: 6/6 + 60/100 = 62.26% under Total Points, 80% under Percent. If you pick the wrong one, you get a wrong grade.

Period grade = Σ (Category grade × Weight) ÷ Σ (Weights)

Weights are relative

Category weights are relative to each other: four categories at weight 100 each give each 25% of the grade. Weights need not total 100 — this calculator normalizes by total weight. A category with no counted work contributes nothing; Schoology's reported redistribution of an empty category's weight is unconfirmed in the docs reviewed, so this calculator does not apply it.

Exceptions: Missing = 0, Excused excluded

Missing counts as 0 — selecting Missing adds a zero score in the cell. Excused and Incomplete are excluded, calculation-wise equal to leaving the cell blank. Collected carries no score and no grading impact. Exempt is removed from calculations. Late is a flag with no automatic penalty — late penalties are school policy. Overdue ≠ Missing: Overdue is a notification state; overdue work not marked Missing has no grade effect yet. A dash (—) means not completed; a blank grade can mean the teacher hid it.

Factor (assumption, labelled)

Assignments have a Factor setting (default 1). Schoology's docs confirm it exists, but the exact formula is not confirmed in the docs reviewed. This calculator applies Factor as a multiplier on both earned and possible points (like an assignment weight) and labels it as an assumption. Leave it at 1 unless your teacher uses it.

Override

Teachers can override a grade; students see only the override, not the calculated grade. Enter an override above to see the calculated grade alongside it.

Why did my grade drop?

  • A Missing flag. It adds a 0 — the most common cause.
  • A category's Calculated-by setting. Total Points vs Percent changes the answer on the same scores.
  • A weight change. Changing weights mid-course affects all grading periods.
  • A hidden grade published. A blank grade can mean the teacher hadn't released it yet.

Schoology is not always the system of record

Many schools sync Schoology grades to an SIS (PowerSchool, Infinite Campus, Aeries). Where a sync exists, the SIS grade is the record — the Schoology gradebook may only reflect work completed inside Schoology. This calculator replicates your Schoology grade; your report card grade is the SIS grade where a sync exists.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming Total Points everywhere. A Percent category averages item percentages instead.
  • Confusing Overdue with Missing. Overdue has no grade effect until marked Missing.
  • Assuming Excused hurts. Excused is excluded — it neither helps nor harms.
  • Assuming one Schoology scale. Scales are teacher/school-created per course.
  • Looking for native what-if or GPA. Schoology has neither natively — use the target solver above and the GPA calculator.
  • Trusting a “GPA” that multiplies weights by grades. That is a weighted course percentage, not a GPA.

Schoology Grade Calculator FAQ

How does Schoology calculate grades?

There is no single Schoology formula. Each grading category has its own Calculated by setting — Total Points (default) or Percent — plus an optional weight and drop-lowest. A period grade is the weighted combination of its category grades, computed from unrounded values. The final grade combines grading periods (plus midterm/final periods) with period weights.

What is Total Points vs Percent in Schoology?

Total Points: category grade = total earned ÷ total possible × 100, so a 200-point item counts twice a 100-point item. Percent: category grade = average of the items' percentages, so each item counts equally. Example: 6/6 + 60/100 gives 62.26% under Total Points and 80% under Percent.

What does Missing mean in Schoology?

Missing counts as 0 — selecting Missing adds a zero score in the cell. That is confirmed for Schoology, unlike PowerSchool where Missing = 0 is unverified as a universal rule. Overdue is different: it is a notification state, not a grade — overdue work not marked Missing has no grade effect yet.

What does Excused mean in Schoology?

Excused is excluded — calculation-wise equal to leaving the cell blank. No penalty, no effect. Incomplete behaves the same way. Neither helps nor hurts the grade.

Does Schoology have a what-if grade feature?

No native what-if. No student-facing hypothetical-score simulator was found in Schoology's own documentation. What-if exists only via the third-party Schoology Plus browser extension. The target solver below fills that gap.

What is Factor in Schoology?

A per-assignment multiplier, default 1. Schoology's docs confirm it exists and that matching Schoology's overall grade requires Factor = 1 for all assignments, but the exact formula is not confirmed in the docs reviewed. This calculator applies it as a multiplier on both earned and possible points (like an assignment weight) and labels it as an assumption.
