Every university GPA uses the same formula and a different table. The formula is universal; the grade-point values, the repeat rule, and the display rule are the school’s own. This guide gives all five tables — ASU, LSU, Purdue, UF, UT Austin — with the traps that make generic GPA calculators wrong.
The formula
Convert each letter grade to grade points under the school’s table, multiply by the course’s credits, add the quality points, and divide by the total graded credits. Excluded symbols (W, I, P, and the like) stay out of both sums.
Why one calculator cannot serve all five schools
Same letter, different points. Three credits of B+ give 9.99 quality points at ASU, UF, and UT Austin (3.33 × 3) but 9.90 at LSU and Purdue (3.3 × 3). A generic calculator using one table is wrong for at least two of the five schools.
| Letter | ASU | LSU | Purdue | UF | UT Austin |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| A+ | 4.33 | 4.3 | 4.0 | — | — |
| A | 4.00 | 4.0 | 4.0 | 4.0 | 4.00 |
| A− | 3.67 | 3.7 | 3.7 | 3.67 | 3.67 |
| B+ | 3.33 | 3.3 | 3.3 | 3.33 | 3.33 |
| B | 3.00 | 3.0 | 3.0 | 3.0 | 3.00 |
| B− | 2.67 | 2.7 | 2.7 | 2.67 | 2.67 |
| C+ | 2.33 | 2.3 | 2.3 | 2.33 | 2.33 |
| C | 2.00 | 2.0 | 2.0 | 2.0 | 2.00 |
| C− | — | 1.7 | 1.7 | 1.67 | 1.67 |
| D+ | — | 1.3 | 1.3 | 1.33 | 1.33 |
| D | 1.00 | 1.0 | 1.0 | 1.0 | 1.00 |
| D− | — | 0.7 | 0.7 | 0.67 | 0.67 |
| Failing | E 0.00 | F 0.0 | E / F / IF 0.0 | E 0.0 | F 0.00 |
“—” means the letter does not exist on that school’s scale. ASU has no C−, D+, or D−. UF and UT Austin have no A+.
The A+ trap
Five schools, four answers. ASU: A+ = 4.33 per course, cumulative capped at 4.00. LSU: A+ = 4.3. Purdue: A+ = 4.0, the same as A. UF and UT Austin: no A+ at all. Any page that writes “A+ = 4.33” as a general rule is wrong for three of these five schools.
Arizona State University
| Letter | Grade points | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| A+ | 4.33 | Exists; highest per-course value |
| A | 4.00 | Excellent |
| A− | 3.67 | |
| B+ | 3.33 | |
| B | 3.00 | Good |
| B− | 2.67 | |
| C+ | 2.33 | |
| C | 2.00 | Average / Passing |
| D | 1.00 | Passing / No Graduate Credit |
| E | 0.00 | Failure (ASU uses E, not F) |
I, NR, P, W, X, Y, Z carry no grade-point value. EN, EU, XE count as 0.00, like E.
Repeats: ASU: a D or E (including EN, EU, XE) may be repeated once at ASU, and the original D/E is deleted from the GPA. Courses with C or higher generally may not be repeated for credit.
Worked example. A+ (3 credits) + B− (3 credits) = (4.33 × 3) + (2.67 × 3) = 12.99 + 8.01 = 21.00 quality points ÷ 6 credits = 3.50 GPA. The calculator starts with exactly these two courses.
Cap example. Three A+ courses at 3 credits each = (4.33 × 9) ÷ 9 = 4.33 raw → reported cumulative GPA capped at 4.00. The cap applies to the cumulative GPA: enter prior cumulative GPA and credits below to see it bind. A semester-only result is not capped.
Louisiana State University — A&M (Baton Rouge)
| Letter | Grade points | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| A+ | 4.3 | One-decimal scale — not 4.33 |
| A | 4.0 | Distinguished mastery |
| A− | 3.7 | |
| B+ | 3.3 | Good mastery |
| B | 3.0 | |
| B− | 2.7 | |
| C+ | 2.3 | Acceptable mastery |
| C | 2.0 | |
| C− | 1.7 | |
| D+ | 1.3 | Minimally acceptable |
| D | 1.0 | |
| D− | 0.7 | |
| F | 0.0 | Failure |
P, W, I, NC are not used in computing the official GPA and carry no quality points.
Repeats: LSU: when a course is repeated, only the most recent grade counts in the GPA. All attempts stay on the transcript. A C− or better generally cannot be repeated for credit without permission; D+ or lower may be retaken; a third attempt needs dean approval.
Worked example. A+ (3 credits) + C− (3 credits) = (4.3 × 3) + (1.7 × 3) = 12.9 + 5.1 = 18.0 quality points ÷ 6 credits = 3.00 GPA (displayed as 3.000). The calculator starts with exactly these two courses.
Purdue University (West Lafayette)
| Letter | Grade points | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| A+ | 4.0 | Same as A — no bonus |
| A | 4.0 | |
| A− | 3.7 | |
| B+ | 3.3 | |
| B | 3.0 | |
| B− | 2.7 | |
| C+ | 2.3 | |
| C | 2.0 | |
| C− | 1.7 | |
| D+ | 1.3 | |
| D | 1.0 | |
| D− | 0.7 | |
| E / F / IF | 0.0 | Failure / Incomplete-converted-to-F |
P, N, I, PI, SI, W, WU, WF, IN, IU, AU, NS are not included in the index.
Repeats: Purdue: all attempts appear on the transcript, but only the most recent attempt counts in the cumulative GPA. Failing the most recent attempt removes credit even if an earlier attempt passed. A Purdue course cannot be retaken outside Purdue for grade replacement.
Worked example. A+ (3 credits) + D− (3 credits) = (4.0 × 3) + (0.7 × 3) = 12.0 + 2.1 = 14.1 quality points ÷ 6 credits = 2.35 GPA. The calculator starts with exactly these two courses. Note the A+ contributed 4.0 per credit, not 4.33 or 4.3.
University of Florida
| Letter | Grade points | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| A | 4.0 | Highest grade |
| A− | 3.67 | |
| B+ | 3.33 | |
| B | 3.0 | |
| B− | 2.67 | |
| C+ | 2.33 | |
| C | 2.0 | |
| C− | 1.67 | |
| D+ | 1.33 | |
| D | 1.0 | |
| D− | 0.67 | |
| E | 0.0 | Failure (UF uses E, not F) |
S/U carry no grade-point value and are not computed in the GPA. W and H are non-punitive and not counted. Punitive I / NG count at 0.0.
Repeats: UF: repeated coursework is counted in the GPA as many times as grades for that course are recorded, although credits are awarded only once. A student who earns C (2.0) or higher will not be allowed to repeat that course (exceptions by approved petition). There is no grade replacement at UF.
Worked example. A (3 credits) + D− (3 credits) = (4.0 × 3) + (0.67 × 3) = 12.00 + 2.01 = 14.01 quality points ÷ 6 credits = 2.335 → displayed as 2.33 (truncated, not 2.34). The calculator starts with exactly these two courses.
Truncation example from the catalog. 3.248 displays as 3.24. A calculator that rounds UF GPAs is wrong.
University of Texas at Austin
| Letter | Grade points | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| A | 4.00 | Highest grade |
| A− | 3.67 | |
| B+ | 3.33 | |
| B | 3.00 | |
| B− | 2.67 | |
| C+ | 2.33 | |
| C | 2.00 | |
| C− | 1.67 | |
| D+ | 1.33 | |
| D | 1.00 | |
| D− | 0.67 | Minimum for undergraduate credit |
| F | 0.00 | Failure |
I, Q, W, X, S, U, CR, NC are excluded from the GPA.
Repeats: UT Austin: there is no grade replacement policy. If a student repeats a course, both grades appear on the transcript and both are calculated into the overall GPA. “The last grade is the official grade” means the grade of record — it does not mean the last grade replaces earlier ones in the GPA.
Worked example. A (3 credits) + D− (3 credits) = (4.00 × 3) + (0.67 × 3) = 12.00 + 2.01 = 14.01 quality points ÷ 6 credits = 2.335 → displayed as 2.34 (rounded display; UT states no truncation rule, unlike UF). The calculator starts with exactly these two courses.
Repeat rules side by side
| School | What counts in the GPA |
|---|---|
| ASU | D/E repeated once at ASU is deleted. C or higher generally cannot be repeated for credit. |
| LSU | Only the most recent grade counts. All attempts stay on the transcript. |
| Purdue | Only the most recent attempt counts. Failing the most recent attempt removes credit. |
| UF | Every recorded grade counts. No grade replacement. |
| UT Austin | Every attempt counts. “Last grade is official” is the grade of record, not replacement. |
Display rules side by side
- ASU: rounded to the nearest 100th; cumulative capped at 4.00.
- LSU: three decimals with rounding (3.95550 → 3.956).
- Purdue: two-decimal presentation rounding.
- UF: truncated to hundredths (3.248 → 3.24) — never rounded.
- UT Austin: two-decimal presentation rounding; no truncation rule stated.
Common mistakes
- Using one table for all schools. B+ alone differs by 0.03 per credit between the two table families.
- Writing 4.33 for every A+. Only ASU uses 4.33; Purdue uses 4.0; UF/UT have no A+.
- Assuming grade replacement. It does not exist at UF or UT Austin.
- Rounding UF’s GPA. UF truncates. Rounding gives the wrong number.
- Applying a percent scale. None of the five catalogs publishes a university-wide percent-to-letter scale.
- Using stale tables. UF’s pre-2009 table and LSU’s superseded repeat text still circulate.
