Schoology vs Canvas — How Grade Calculation Differs

By Fawad Ullah · October 2026

Schoology and Canvas both show grades, but they calculate and display them differently. Using the wrong system's rules on the other system's grades gives a wrong number. Here is the difference that matters.

What you see

Canvas shows a current grade (graded work only) and a total grade (ungraded work as zero), with a toggle between them. Schoology shows per-period grades and an overall grade per course — no current/total toggle. Blank work is excluded until scored. If you are looking for the “total” toggle in Schoology, it doesn't exist.

How the grade is computed

Schoology: each category has its own Calculated by setting — Total Points (default) or Percent — plus an optional weight and drop-lowest. A period grade is the weighted combination of category grades from unrounded values. The final grade combines grading periods (plus midterm/final periods) with period weights. Canvas: assignment groups with weights, best-outcome drops, and a current-vs-final distinction. Schoology's per-category Total Points vs Percent choice has no Canvas equivalent.

What-if

Canvas has a built-in What-If feature. Schoology has no native what-if — it exists only via the third-party Schoology Plus browser extension. The target solver in the Schoology Grade Calculator fills that gap.

Missing and exceptions

In both, Missing counts as 0. In Canvas, missing is a status with a defined effect (counts as zero unless excused, and Canvas can auto-apply it). In Schoology, Missing adds a zero score in the cell. The difference is in the surrounding statuses: Schoology's Incomplete is excluded like Excused, and Schoology has Collected (no score, no impact) as a distinct state. In both systems, Excused is excluded. In both, Late has no automatic penalty.

System of record

Schoology is not always the record. Many schools sync Schoology grades to an SIS (PowerSchool, Infinite Campus, Aeries), and where a sync exists the SIS grade is the record. Canvas is a course gradebook. PowerSchool is the system of record. Schoology sits in between: it may be the record, or it may feed the record. If your Schoology grade and your report card grade differ, the sync is the first place to look.

GPA

Neither gradebook shows GPA. GPA comes from the SIS or a school's own calculation. Use the Schoology GPA Calculator to compute it from your course grades.

Schoology vs Canvas — FAQ

Does Schoology show a current grade and a total grade like Canvas?

No. Canvas shows a current grade (graded work only) and a total grade (ungraded work as zero). Schoology shows per-period grades and an overall grade; there is no current/total toggle. Blank work is excluded until scored.

Does Schoology have a what-if grade feature like Canvas?

No. Canvas has a built-in What-If feature; Schoology has no native what-if. What-if in Schoology exists only via the third-party Schoology Plus browser extension. The target solver in the Schoology Grade Calculator fills that gap.

How do missing assignments differ between Schoology and Canvas?

In both, Missing counts as 0. In Canvas, a missing assignment is a status with a defined effect (counts as zero unless excused, and Canvas can auto-apply it). In Schoology, Missing adds a zero score in the cell. The difference is in the surrounding statuses: Schoology's Incomplete is excluded like Excused, and Schoology has Collected (no score, no impact) as a distinct state.

Is Schoology the system of record for grades?

Not always.

Can I use the same calculator for Schoology and Canvas?

Not directly — the methods, statuses, and portal behaviour differ. Schoology's per-category Calculated by (Total Points vs Percent) and period combining have no Canvas equivalent. Use the Schoology Grade Calculator for Schoology courses and the Canvas Grade Calculator for Canvas courses.

Which system shows GPA?

Neither gradebook. Neither Schoology nor Canvas shows GPA in the gradebook — GPA comes from the SIS or a school's own calculation. Use the Schoology GPA Calculator or the Canvas GPA path on this site instead.
