How to Calculate Your Grade in Schoology

By Fawad Ullah · October 2026

There is no single Schoology formula. Your teacher's setup decides the categories, the per-category calculation method, the weights, the grading periods, and the grade scale. To replicate the number in your Grades view, you have to match that setup — then the arithmetic is straightforward.

Step 1 — One category at a time

Each grading category has its own Calculated by setting — Total Points (the default) or Percent. Total Points: category grade = Σ earned ÷ Σ possible × 100. Percent: category grade = average of the items' percentages. The same scores give different answers: 6/6 + 60/100 = 62.26% under Total Points, 80% under Percent. Check each category's setting before you calculate.

Step 2 — Combine the categories

A period grade is the weighted combination of its category grades: Σ (Category grade × Weight) ÷ Σ (Weights). Weights are relative — four categories at weight 100 each give each 25% of the grade. Calculations use unrounded values; display rounds to the hundredth.

Worked example (Springfield's)

Homework: 12/13 + 11/13, Total Points, weight 50 → 88.46% displayed. Quizzes: 15/17, Total Points, weight 50 → 88.24% displayed. Overall from unrounded values: (50 × 88.4615… + 50 × 88.2353…) ÷ 100 = 88.35%.

Step 3 — Combine the periods

The final grade combines grading periods (plus midterm/final periods) with period weights. Example: Q1 88% × 45 + Q2 92% × 45 + Exam 90% × 10 = 90.0%. Use the Schoology Final Grade Calculator for this step.

Exceptions: the part most people get wrong

  • Missing counts as 0 — selecting Missing adds a zero score in the cell. Example: 90, 80, missing (all 100 pts) → 170/300 = 56.67% as 0, vs 170/200 = 85% if excluded.
  • Excused and Incomplete are excluded — calculation-wise equal to leaving the cell blank. Neither helps nor hurts.
  • Collected carries no score and no grading impact.
  • Exempt is removed from calculations.
  • Late is a flag with no automatic penalty — late penalties are school policy.
  • Overdue ≠ Missing. Overdue is a notification state; overdue work not marked Missing has no grade effect yet.
  • Dash (—) means not completed. Blank can mean the teacher hid the grade.

Factor (assumption, labelled)

Assignments have a Factor setting (default 1). Schoology's docs confirm it exists, but the exact formula is not confirmed in the docs reviewed. Our calculator applies Factor as a multiplier on both earned and possible points (like an assignment weight) and labels it as an assumption. Leave it at 1 unless your teacher uses it.

Drop-lowest and override

A category's Drop-lowest setting automatically drops the lowest n grades within that category. Teachers can also override a grade — students see only the override, not the calculated grade. If your number differs from the teacher's, an override is one possible cause.

Why did my grade drop?

  • A Missing flag. It adds a 0 — the most common cause.
  • A category's Calculated-by setting. Total Points vs Percent changes the answer on the same scores.
  • A weight change. Changing weights mid-course affects all grading periods.
  • A hidden grade published. A blank grade can mean the teacher hadn't released it yet.

Schoology is not always the system of record

Many schools sync Schoology grades to an SIS (PowerSchool, Infinite Campus, Aeries). Where a sync exists, the SIS grade is the record — the Schoology gradebook may only reflect work completed inside Schoology. This guide replicates your Schoology grade; your report card grade is the SIS grade where a sync exists.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming Total Points everywhere. A Percent category averages item percentages instead.
  • Confusing Overdue with Missing. Overdue has no grade effect until marked Missing.
  • Assuming Excused hurts. Excused is excluded — it neither helps nor harms.
  • Assuming one Schoology scale. Scales are teacher/school-created per course.
  • Looking for native what-if or GPA. Schoology has neither natively — use the target solver in the grade calculator and the Schoology GPA Calculator.

How to Calculate Your Grade in Schoology — FAQ

How do I calculate my grade in Schoology?

In three steps: (1) for each category, compute the category grade using that category's Calculated by setting — Total Points (total earned ÷ total possible × 100) or Percent (average of item percentages); (2) combine the category grades with their relative weights; (3) combine the period grades with period weights. Use the Schoology Grade Calculator for step 1–2 and the Schoology Final Grade Calculator for step 3.

What is Total Points vs Percent in Schoology?

Total Points: category grade = total earned ÷ total possible × 100, so a 200-point item counts twice a 100-point item. Percent: category grade = average of the items' percentages, so each item counts equally. Example: 6/6 + 60/100 gives 62.26% under Total Points and 80% under Percent.

Do Schoology category weights have to total 100?

No. Weights are relative to each other — four categories at weight 100 each give each 25% of the grade. The calculator normalizes by total weight. A category with no counted work contributes nothing.

What does Missing mean in Schoology?

Missing counts as 0 — selecting Missing adds a zero score in the cell. Excused and Incomplete are excluded, equal to blank. Late is a flag with no automatic penalty. Overdue is a notification state, not a grade.

Why is my Schoology grade different from what I calculated?

Common causes: a Missing flag adding a 0, a category set to Percent instead of Total Points, a weight change mid-course (which affects all periods), a grade not yet published, or an override your teacher entered — students see only the override. And where an SIS sync exists, the SIS grade is the record.

Does Schoology show my GPA or a what-if?

Neither natively. No Schoology documentation reviewed shows a native GPA display or a student-facing what-if simulator. What-if exists only via the third-party Schoology Plus extension. Use the GPA calculator and the target solver on this site instead.
